Description

In the city of Chania, well known photographers existed since the end of the 19th century. They photographed mainly in studios and often traveled in the countryside with a camera on their backs, capturing historical events, monuments, landscapes and common people. After the war, many photo studios were opened in various cities. In Chania, the area of the photo studios was mainly along King Constantine street, later Dimokratias street, nowadays called Andrea Papandreou street.

Six photo studios existed along King Constantine street, giving prestige to the city center. At that time photography was the prerogative of people who could afford the cost of it, which was quite high.

After the war times were hard, for many families from the suburbs or villages a single family or military photo would be, perhaps the only one they would take in their entire lives. Many families, having lost loved ones in the wars were lucky if they even had a photo to remember them. Some photographers made sure that this one photo was reproduced with a special method, enlarging and printing it faintly on photo paper and then drawing the details with special charcoal pencils.

Many 20th century professions changed  due to development in technology at very fast speeds. The development greatly influenced photographers. However, there are many who insist on the old manual lenses and techniques used by photographers in the past, avoiding excessive and pointless photography, something that is closer to the art of photography, and less to the profession.
